Look Up in 2013 And You Might Just See a Comet

Earth's celestial sphere is about to get a whole lot brighter. At least twice in 2013, comets bright enough to be seen by the naked eye will appear.

These balls of ice and rock abound in our solar system. There are more than 4000 known comets, including 500 that are short-term, meaning they orbit the sun in periods of less than 200 years. The number of unknown comets is immeasurable. Short-term comets likely come from the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune's orbit, a field of icy objects that includes Pluto, while long-term comets are believed to originate from the solar system's Oort Cloud, a mysterious band that is 50,000 times further from the sun than the Earth is.

But great comets?the spectacular celestial bodies that shine so brightly they catch the eyes of people not even looking for them?are much rarer. Some, like Haley's Comet, might be seen twice in a lifetime if you're lucky. Others, such as Comet Ikeya-Seki, also known as the Great Comet of 1965, don't complete their solar orbits for thousands of years.

"There have been only 32 great comets in the past 1000 years," says Dennis Young, a Sedona, Arizona-based professional field astronomer with more than 35 years or experience, "indicating that we might expect an exceptional comet on average only three times per century." That's why the possibility of seeing two great comets in 2013?Comet PANSTARRS and Comet ISON?is such a big deal.

For a comet to be truly visible to the naked eye, three things have to happen. First, the comet has to come within close proximity to the earth?ISON is expected to come within 40 million miles. Second, it must have a large nucleus that ejects lots of gas and dust for us to see. The more it emits, the brighter the comet. Third, it must get as close as possible to the sun, because the closer it comes, the brighter it will be. With so many prerequisites it's no wonder great comets are few and far between.

While there's no guarantee of a spectacular sighting in either case?comets have a way of fizzling out at the last minute?both of the great comets slated for our celestial hemisphere in 2013 look extremely promising. The first great comet to appear this year will be Comet PANSTARRS, a nonperiodic comet?meaning this is a once-in-a-lifetime event. The comet was first discovered in June 2011 by Hawaii's Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response (PANSTARRS) project from which it draws its name. At first the astronomers assigned it an apparent magnitude of 19 (the higher the number, the dimmer it appears.) A magnitude of 19 is too dim to be seen without a telescope, but scientists revised their rating of PANSTARRS to an apparent magnitude of 13.5 by May 2012. It has grown in brilliance since then and should be clearly visible to the naked eye in March. Astronomers originally predicted that it may even reach an apparent magnitude of 0, which is as bright as Vega, the second brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere, though they've since adjusted their estimates to a magnitude of 1.

The second comet, C/2012 S1 (ISON), was discovered this past September by two amateur astronomers in Russia. It's what's called a sungrazing comet, meaning it will approach so close to the sun that smaller comets would evaporate at the distance. "That this could be the brightest comet anyone alive has ever seen is a serious statement," says Young.

At the end of November, ISON will reach perihelion, or its closest point to the sun. It is expected to come within less than 750,000 miles of our star's surface?pretty much brushing against it. At this point it might also be visible during the day, and some astronomers predict that it may even outshine the moon.

Yet comets, even great ones, are unpredictable. They can brighten, fade, or often break up into fragments for reasons astronomers don't entirely understand. This year's night sky may indeed put on a show for the ages. Or it may simply fold into history. We're hoping for the former.

Yankees SS Jeter cleared for baseball activity

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:53 p.m. ET Jan. 16, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter says he's been cleared to start baseball activity in his recovery from a broken left ankle.

The 38-year-old team captain reiterated Wednesday that he is on track to be in New York's starting lineup for the opener on April 1.

Jeter won't take the field for workouts until later this month. The 13-time All-Star said that is his normal pre-spring training routine.

"I've got the OK to start," Jeter said before a launch party for his Turn 2 Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic. "But I don't start until next week or the week after, anyway. In terms of baseball activity, I'm right where I need to be."

Jeter broke his ankle lunging for a grounder in Game 1 of the AL championship series against Detroit on Oct. 13. He had surgery a week later and the Yankees said recovery time would be four to five months.

The Next Second Amendment War

Fred Lutger, owner of Freddie Bear Sports, shows a Ruger Single Ten .22 caliber revolver. An Illinois ban on concealed weapons was struck down by the Court of Appeals

In the wake of the Newtown shooting, Supreme Court watchers assured us that most of the possibilities for new gun regulation are indisputably legal, with nothing to fear from the court?s recent rulings reviving the individual right to bear arms under the Second Amendment. Adam Liptak pointed out in the New York Times that ?vanishingly few? of the 500-odd challenges to gun regulations and prosecution have succeeded since District of Columbia v. Heller, the Second Amendment decision that struck down the District?s strict gun-control law in 2008. Lawmakers can still ban felons and the mentally ill from owning guns?Heller said so, and a subsequent ruling in 2010, McDonald v. Chicago, repeated the point. They can still stop people from carrying concealed weapons in places like schools and national parks. And lower courts have also upheld bans on machine guns and sawed-off shotguns. Universal background check, tighter requirements for mental health reporting, and banning high-capacity ammunition clips all look safe, too.

Still, there is a hot question bouncing around the lower courts: whether the constitutional right to bear arms, as laid out in Heller and McDonald, extends outside the home. The answer matters especially, but not only, for how tightly the states or Congress can limit people from carrying concealed weapons. Judges are dividing on that question, and the upshot is this: If the Supreme Court wants to stop the recognition of a right to bear arms outside the home, it will have to step up and say so.

Judge Richard Posner (a Slate contributor) basically dared the justices to do that in a December opinion for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. At least that?s how I read him. Writing for himself in the New Republic, Posner has been only critical of Justice Antonin Scalia?s majority opinion in Heller. But with his judicial robes on, he struck down an Illinois law that banned the carrying of concealed weapons outside law enforcement almost without exception. He noted that the Supreme Court in Heller and McDonald said that ?the need for defense of self-family, and property is most acute? in the home, but argues that in the 18th Century, when the Second Amendment was written, a right to keep and bear arms ?could not rationally have been limited? to inside people?s houses. Remember the wildness of the Wild West, Posner says. Or, as Yale law professor Akhil Amar pointed out to me, a line in Dred Scott, the evil pre-Civil War decision that held that neither slaves nor free black people were U.S. citizens or protected by the Constitution. In that ruling, the Supreme Court said that if blacks were full citizens, they would have ?the full liberty ... to keep and carry arms wherever they went." And Dred Scott matters even though it?s not from the founding era, because McDonald says that the Second Amendment applies to the states through the 14th Amendment, enacted during Reconstruction in 1868.

Another good reason for striking down Illinois? ban, both Posner and Amar point out, is that it was an outlier: the only one of its kind in the country. So maybe it doesn?t mean that much for the rest of the states?maybe they can still tightly restrict the carrying of concealed weapons as long as they allow for permitting in some way. That?s what the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit decided last November. That case is about a New York law that says you can get a permit to carry a concealed gun if you can show ?proper cause.? New Yorkers must show that they have more need of self-defense than the average person, for example, because they?re the target of a threat?which is pretty restrictive. But the Second Circuit said that was OK because a right to bear arms outside the home goes beyond Heller and McDonald. In other words, the court disagrees with Posner on his core reading of the Supreme Court.

To add one more court to the mix: Last March, a federal judge in Maryland struck down a state requirement that asks permit applicants to show a ?good and substantial reason? for carrying a concealed weapon. The Maryland law this court nixed looks a lot like the New York law the Second Circuit allowed: The state of Maryland would like to limit gun ??permits to those who can show they?ve been personally threatened (or who are in a business in which you must carry cash).

At some point the Supreme Court will probably take one of these cases because this split among the lower courts is the type that only the justices can resolve. You can see why it?s on the justices to say that there?s no right to bear arms outside the home, if that is indeed a limit they see in the Second Amendment. In the meantime, it?s a good thing the Obama administration and Congress aren?t fussing with conceal and carry laws. There are plenty of ways to cut back on gun violence and also steer clear of the next round in the Second Amendment wars.

Wake Forest Baptist specialists emphasize education, long-term commitment

Wake Forest Baptist HealthWire

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Jan. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ ? Genetics, economics, environment, psychology and government policies have all played roles in why, as a nation, the United States has for a generation been getting heavier. No surprise then, that controlling weight needs to be about much more than just diet and exercise.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20111114/DC06171LOGO) ?

?My job is to build a specialty program that deals with medical weight management, providing a long-term care model to treat obesity as the disease it is,? said Dr. Jamy Ard , co-director of the new adult Weight Management Center at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and leader of two non-surgical weight-control programs.

Ard?s approach is shared by the leaders of other weight-control programs at Wake Forest Baptist, including those for children and older adults. All of these programs stress education?not just for the people facing weight issues, but for their families, too ? and long-term commitment to changed habits in addition to healthier diet and exercise practices.

Some people view bariatric surgery as a quick fix for obesity, but at Wake Forest Baptist more is expected of patients than just showing up for the procedure.

Patients are encouraged to lose weight or at least stay ?weight neutral? in the month or so before undergoing bariatric surgery, which reduces the size of the stomach or limits its capacity to process food. By adopting new habits during this period, most patients lose a significant amount of weight before the operation, said Dr. Adolfo ?Fuzz? Fernandez, co-director of the Weight Management Center and head of its bariatric surgery program.

?The goal is making those lifestyle changes,? said Fernandez, who was a classmate of Ard?s at Duke Medical School. ?Obesity is a disease. Surgery is the most successful treatment, but without life modification ? portion control, healthy choices and exercise ? even surgery will not be successful in the long term.?

In other words, patients who have undergone bariatric surgery can put weight back on if they haven?t changed their habits.

?We offer a monthly post-op support group ? group therapy so to speak ? and most of those patients do really well,? Fernandez said. ?We don?t see a lot of recidivism.?

Susan and Allen Fletcher had bariatric surgery at Wake Forest Baptist after years of following diets that only worked for brief periods. She was 288 pounds at her heaviest and now weighs about half that. She started by losing 50 pounds before having the surgery. ?Her husband is down to 180 pounds from a high of 450.

The benefits, she said, ?have been life-changing.?

When she had a work conference in New Orleans and her husband went with her, she said, they immediately discovered the pleasure of being able to fit comfortably in airplane seats. Better yet, she said, during conference down time they were able to explore.

?New Orleans is just the most amazing city,? Susan Fletcher said. ?Every day after I finished classes we would walk for a couple of hours, just exploring. There?s so much on that trip we would have missed if we had not lost the weight.?

When it comes to young people with weight problems, Dr. Joseph Skelton believes giving parents tools to raise healthier children is just as critical as working with the children themselves.

?You improve those parenting skills, you can improve the children?s weight,? said Skelton, director of the Brenner FIT (Families in Training) program at Wake Forest Baptist?s Brenner Children?s Hospital.? ?

So the Brenner FIT program includes teaching parents and children about the importance of moderation (such as buying and eating a single-size cup of ice cream rather than a pint or half-gallon), showing how low-calorie snacks can be tasty and better for everyone in the household and pointing out the benefits of choosing diet sodas over sugary drinks.

Tammy Stegall said she and her husband, Mike, decided they needed help for their overweight son, Michael, when he was 13 and had started to bully his younger brother, a sign that he himself was being bullied at school.

?There are so many misconceptions about what is best, what you eat and what you don?t eat,? she said. ?I needed some guidance. And I wanted something safe for my child.?

Change went slowly for the Stegall family at first. After a few months, said Michael Stegall , now 15, ?I looked in the mirror and said, ?That?s not who I wanted to be.? And so I thought, ?Let?s try to make a change.??

Brenner FIT was a good match, he said, because the program preaches ?one step at a time.? He wound up losing 50 pounds, and has kept the weight off.

Weight problems may be different but are no less critical for older adults, according to Barbara Nicklas , Ph.D., who leads weight-management efforts for seniors through the Sticht Center on Aging at Wake Forest Baptist.

?We believe there are specific challenges to older folks that we need to address in our programs, different motivations to start with,? she said. ?Why would a 70-year-old want to lose weight??

Among the motivators for seniors, Nicklas said, are improving their physical abilities in grip (to carry groceries, for example), strength (so they can walk or rise from a chair without difficulty) and stamina (walking further, being able to play with grandchildren, etc.).

A 24-week Sticht Center program called My Turn teaches seniors about their habits and how to make positive changes. The classes are held at a YMCA and a retirement community in Winston-Salem.

Calvert Jeffers , 72, said that although he was not grossly overweight, vanity became an issue.

?My granddaughter kept teasing me about my belly. I said, ?OK, I?m going to get that under control,?? he said. ?These things become a matter of how one goes about just simple day-to-day activities. I continue to exercise, things I?ve always been doing, but I do it with a little more purpose in mind and a little more discipline as a result of My Turn.?

Judy Freeman , who at 75 requires a walker, has lost 50 pounds midway through her second series of My Turn classes. She said she initially hoped that her arthritis pain would be reduced through the program, something that hasn?t happened.

But paying more attention to healthier habits is helping her to get ?involved with things that are not necessarily physical,? she said.

?There?s writing class, the book club and all kinds of things like that,? she said. ?It may not be that I am free of pain, but I do have more energy.?

Wake Forest Baptist ?s weight-management efforts are aimed at people of all ages because of changes in behavior toward food and nutrition, especially in the past 20 years.

Ard points to the proliferation of fast food and processed foods, larger portion sizes, agricultural policies that support production of unhealthier foods and a decline in active lifestyles as some of the reasons behind the high rates of obesity in the United States ? approximately 36 percent among adults, 40 percent among seniors and 17 percent among young people age 2 to 19.

As obesity rates have soared, so, too, have related health problems such as heart disease and diabetes. Consequently, Ard and his colleagues fear that the next generation may have a lower life expectancy than the current generation.

?But you can?t stop the forces of innovation and capitalism and entrepreneurship,? Ard said. ?As long as people are going to be incentivized to make money with new technologies and labor-saving devices and new food products, you?re going to have these things and they?re going to keep coming faster and faster.

?So our job is not to say, ?Hey, we can?t have any sugar-containing beverages because we think those are bad.? Food is around to be enjoyed. We have to be able to adjust, to come up with new strategies to deal with the new environment that we?re in and new policies to help us navigate these new challenges, leading to a healthier population overall.?

Wi-Fi and Cellular Models of iPad Mini, iPad 4 Debut in China This Friday

Anita Li

Wi-Fi and Cellular versions of the iPad mini and the fourth-generation iPad will debut in China this week, Apple announced Monday.

Both devices will be available to Chinese consumers starting this Friday, the Cupertino, Calif. company said in a release. They are currently sold in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Interestingly, the iPad mini received a lukewarm reception when it first launched in China last month. Reports suggested that turnout for Apple's 7.9-inch tablet was minimal, and that lines were "nearly nonexistent" ? even in high-traffic areas such as the company's Beijing-based flagship store.

Still, Apple products are wildly popular in China, with more than 2 million units of the iPhone 5 sold in the first weekend it launched there.

Company CEO Tim Cook has made it clear that Apple considers the Chinese market a priority.

"China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products," he said last month.

The Wi-Fi and cellular-capable iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad start at $459 and $629, respectively (for the 16GB models).

To our China-based readers: Do you plan to buy these versions of the latest iPad and iPad mini? Tell us in the comments below.

South Florida identity thieves jailed in $3 million tax refund case

A woman who stole more than $3 million in less than three months by illegally filing fraudulent income tax returns ? many on behalf of dead people ? was sentenced Monday to 2 1/2 years in federal prison.

Sabrina Balkman-Bradwell, 47, who is also known as "Nellie Bell," admitted last year that she filed numerous false returns and received approximately 948 income tax refund checks and electronic deposits, worth more $3,057,914, court records show. The tax returns were all filed between January 15 and March 23, 2011.

A co-conspirator, Edwin Bonannee, 32, of Hollywood, was sentenced Monday to two years and two months in prison and agreed to turn over $286,776 worth of restitution that federal agents seized from linked bank accounts.

Federal prosecutors had recommended that Balkman-Bradwell and Bonannee should both get reduced punishments because they said the duo provided a very significant level of help in tracking down and prosecuting other identity thieves.

After hearing about the extent of their cooperation and learning that both of them received threats from people who walked up to them on the street or called them on their phones, U.S. District Judge William Dimitrouleas decided they deserved even more of a break than prosecutors suggested.

Balkman-Bradwell, of Hialeah, and Bonannee pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud the government.

Bonannee's lawyer, Edward O'Donnell, said his client was orphaned at the age of 8 and grew up in 12 foster homes, where he was physically and emotionally abused. Though Bonannee stole identities and committed fraud, O'Donnell said he did his best to make up for his crimes by testifying against others who were involved in similar crimes.

Bonannee was a "superstar" informant and cooperating witness, O'Donnell told the judge, adding that he will likely suffer in prison because of that cooperation with law enforcement.

Balkman-Bradwell's lawyer, Rick Hutchinson, said she was being punished more severely because prosecutors were able to prove that a greater amount of money moved through her accounts.

Prosecutor Neil Karadbil told the judge that the arrests were made as part of an undercover FBI investigation that led to Bonannee's phone being tapped by investigators.

Bonannee and Balkman-Bradwell worked together and also worked separately with other identity thieves, the prosecution said. Investigators have not yet been able to track down all of the stolen money but have made several related arrests and told the judge they expect to make more arrests soon.

The two had "almost a mother-son relationship" that involved her counseling him, Karadbil said. "They also prayed together in the course of their conversations," he said.

TODAY hosts take over Globes red carpet

Frederic J. Brown / AFP - Getty Images

TODAY's Savannah Guthrie, Matt Lauer, Al Roker and Natalie Morales arrive at the 2013 Golden Globes.

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Sunday is one of the biggest nights of the year for Hollywood -- the arrival of the 70th annual Golden Globe Awards! And who better than the TODAY team of Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker and Natalie Morales to bring all of the great red carpet action just outside the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles?

The fantastic four took their own stroll down the carpet early on, all the better to be able to emcee the Golden Globes Arrivals Special.

7 p.m. ET

Standing just 20 feet from where the limos dropped off the stars, Lauer and Guthrie stood armed with microphones, ready to approach all of the arriving stars before they even got to the rest of the red carpet.

Morales (recovered from her on-the-carpet fashion mishap with Guthrie) nabbed TODAY friend and nominee (for "Silver Linings Playbook") Bradley Cooper, who noted that the nomination was great but it didn't make a huge change in his life: "Life got surreal a while ago," he told her. "I stopped trying to make sense of it."

Meanwhile, Lauer and Guthrie spoke with Jon Bon Jovi, a nominee for his song "Not Running Anymore" from "Stand Up Guys," who said he had to head back to New York the next day to rehearse for a tour. Shortly after he moved on, the pair spoke with Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban; she's nominated for two very different roles ("Hemingway & Gellhorn," an HBO film; and feature "The Paperboy"). "I had a great year in terms of diversity," she noted.?

Elsewhere, Roker wished Julia Louis-Dreyfus a happy birthday and then congratulated her on her nomination for "Veep." So who did she pattern her Vice-Presidential character after? "You, Al Roker!" she chuckled. As for any birthday cake -- forget it. "I couldn't eat any cake and fit into this dress."

7:17 p.m. ET

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, both looking very glamorous, stopped by Lauer and Guthrie and were doing their best to quell nerves -- important, since they're hosting the night's show. "I just got here on Friday," said Fey. "It's not a show you can rehearse much for. We do get pretty naked."

"We ... read a lot of poetry we've written," threw in Poehler.?

And about the drinking game audiences should play? "Rules are whatever you want them to be," said Fey, noting that if anyone thanked Harvey Weinstein, everyone had to eat a meatball sub.

After they departed, George Clooney (who will present an award tonight) and date Stacy Keibler took it in stride when Lauer said that Guthrie was going to have to deal with any security issues before they continued down the red carpet. "Savannah would like to pat you down," he said.

"Stacy said it was OK," added Guthrie.

"I thought later I'd be harassed, but not right off the bat," grinned Clooney.

7:28 p.m. ET

Red carpets are not a new phenomenon, Lauer pointed out to Guthrie, even citing Greek playwright Aeschylus in his tongue-in-cheek history lesson. But all that went away shortly after Daniel Day-Lewis (nominated for "Lincoln") and his wife, Rebecca Miller, paused to look at a photo Lauer handed them: Day-Lewis during his White House tour, reading Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. "It was quite a wonderful day for me," he noted.

But, as Day-Lewis also pointed out, playing Lincoln was a little challenging; "(I knew) if we go down in flames with ths one, I'll never be able to show my face in this country," he laughed.

Shortly after, nominee (for "Arbitrage") Richard Gere and his wife Carey Lowell?paused for a quick chat -- and Gere referenced his recent marathon appearance on TODAY, noting that Lauer hadn't been around. "Richard is my new co-host," quipped Guthrie to Lauer.

Meanwhile, Adele was making her first post-baby public appearance with Al Roker on the carpet, and she hasn't changed a bit from when she hit so big with "21." She's nominated for her "Skyfall" tune, and confessed she was a little worried about taking on the James Bond institution: "Many people have risen with it, and many people have fallen (doing Bond songs)."

7:42 p.m. ET

As the clock ticked ever more toward the actual showtime, Lauer and Guthrie grabbed nominee (for "Les Miserables") Hugh Jackman -- looking very hirsute in a beard -- and reminded him that he compared singing live on set for the film to filming a nude scene once. "It's like a nude scene in front of 15 people," he admitted again.?

Over by Morales, Helen Mirren (nominated for "Hitchcock") was wearing a long-sleeved dress with no plunging neckline, which allowed her to keep toasty despite chilly temps. "I'm warm and comfortable, which is kind of a trick in some of these dresses," she said. But a chill seemed to go down her spine when Morales reminded her that host Tina Fey might try to single her out during the evening. "I'm sure she'll have a pop at me," Mirren admitted. "I've girded my loins, ready for that."

7:52 p.m. ET

"Tonight Show's" Jay Leno helped wrap up the evening for Lauer and Guthrie, who joked "I haven't seen you since Friday, when you were on the show!" (Fans may recall just how raucous that event was -- the TODAY hosts oversaw a "Meal or No Meal" skit?during their appearance.) But as he noted, there was no question that Fey and Poehler would dominate the evening.

"They are the two funniest women I know," he said. "I'm excited."

As is everyone!

Be sure to tune into TODAY?Monday morning as Matt, Savannah, Al and Natalie report live from Hollywood on all of the Golden Globe winners, surprises and after-party details!

My girlfriend is currently studying a semester abroad - she is in spain. We have agreed to keep the long distance relationship - skyline occasionally and texting a bit every day (at some point there is only so much you can say over text). As one might expect, she is meeting a lot of new people.

About a week after going there I see this guy in a picture with her. In group pictures, he always seems to have part of his body leaning on her - sometimes his head. Now, these didn't really? bother me at all.? A couple days later, she puts a profile picture up of her and him. My gut instinct is that nothing has happened between the two but rather? she just wanted to see how I would react. I didn't say anything because in all honesty it never really crossed my mind. It's just a stupid profile picture - I have tons I pictures with other girls and so on.?

Anyways, three-4 days later, the picture isn't changed but deleted completely.? To me, this is the more shockin than anything else. Since it was her default pic. It was pretty noticeable that it had suddenly been deleted. What do you guys think? Trying to get a reaction out of me and failed? Trying to hide something?

I'd rather avoid a needless confrontation if you guys believe my thoughts to be unwarranted.

Sounds like something's up, man. The only thing you can do is ask her about it. Do it over skype, not by texting.

Long distance, ugh, rough.

It seems like if it's gonna work out, you ought to be able to talk to her about it, about any thing. But then again maybe this is something you don't wanna know? I wouldn't confront her like "Who the hell was that dude in your profile pic?!?" but if you have to bring it up maybe something casual like "Hey what happened to that pic of you and your friend whatshisname?, that was a good pic..."? ? You either trust her or you don't, and you ought to keep in touch with her by talking to her- not by facebook stalking and reading into every picture she puts up.

I just returned from my study abroad trip.? I was gone for several months, but maintained my LDR with my boyfriend.? Here's the thing about studying abroad.? Your girlfriend is going to meet lots of people and make lots of friends.? Try to be happy for her and support her in her experiences.? Establish some way to effectively communicate your feelings to each other because it will be a pretty rough ride.? But if she is maintaining a LDR while abroad, then you obviously are very important to her.? It's too much work to try to maintain a LDR if this wasn't the case.

So trust your girlfriend, and try not to put too much thought into a facebook picture.? But if you're concerned, ask her about this guy.? Don't "play up her ego." Just ask her, with genuine curiosity, about her experience there.

Maybe something was going on between the two of them & they got into a fight so she deleted it?

Who really knows unless you ask.

I don't agree. i appreciate the female 2 cents, but no.
she may just be very non-confrontational and would rather not have to deal w/"manning up" and breaking up, but would want the facebooking to do it for her.?
however, the pic could have given the other guy the wrong idea and so she had to take it down to stop him from trying to get in her panties.
i agree you should take lynnch's approach.
make it no big deal, play up her ego, and let her feel like she can tell you everything.

I always get concerned when there are females willing to put up a picture in order to "test their man" or "make him jealous"

That mindset is a relationship killer.

Yeah I'm at a mix between everything that's been said here. Largely because I do not read into every Facebook post/photo because as I have stated before - I think Facebook is stupid. and, in coordination with what has been said here - it only results in speculation.

The relationship has had moments where we reaffirmed are trust - but never "ISSUES" of trust. I have been very supportive of this trip, explaining that I want her close but indeed want her to embark on this great experience. She is not one to cheat and I have found it pointless AND WASTEFUL to say have fun and talk to me when you get back and see if we can work something out. Anyways, I'm gonna ask her today. She tells me pretty frequently about her new encounters so I wanted to see if anything came out on its own.

Like some of you have suggested, I am trying to let her enjoy herself - not have her staring down at a screen all day. That just makes the girl more sad - common sense in a LDR. I am waiting for a nice time to ask her - we Skype every few days but its normally been late for her. She goes out drinks and likes to come back and talk to me from like 4-6 am her time occasionally. In the event that this did spiral down int a more grand ordeal, I'd rather she be completely sober. Moreover, the last thing you tell a Girl is OK I have something to ask you but I'm not going to now. A chain of events like so will certainly lead her down a path to temporary insanity (damn you female thought processing)

a friend of mine, married, 34 - we're older but both of us are back in school now - studied in spain abroad this past summer. he went with a bunch of younger students. from the way he put it, most of the women were spoken for and up to stuff that, had their s.o.'s found out, should've gotten them dumped.

i'd ask her, and when she lies about it, wait until she gets back to dump her. for me, i wouldn't want to break it off while she's there, because then she can be out getting her fill of girl power and dick for being a cheating whore to begin with. i would want to let her sit in it for as long as possible. it would be a success on my end if she failed her minimester and spent every night crying herself to sleep wondering what i'm going to do when she gets home.

I dunno, might as well at least casually ask her about it and see how she reacts. Don't push it or get mad, though.

For a little optimism, I studied abroad a year ago and there was this girl in my group who had a boyfriend, and who I was often times close to in pictures. I could tell we were a little attracted to each other, but nothing ever came of it because I knew she was not the type to cheat, and I'm not the type to help a girl cheat. I could tell her boyfriend was a bit jealous of it too cuz she'd always bring up how they'd talk about the pictures of us, and he'd sorta make fun of me haha.

Really we were just pretty good friends, and she liked to take a lot of pictures. I wouldn't worry about it much if I were you man. If she's a good girl, you should be fine.

But like I said, if you're curious, casually bring it up and see how she reacts. Based on how she reacts, you should be able to gauge if anything is up. Like if she gets a little high strung and aggressive, you might have a problem.
