Alums Noble and Germain: Communications Pioneers

The University of Connecticut has produced more than a few ?household names? in the sciences, engineering and innovation arenas, many of them visionaries whose contributions underpin today?s leading technologies.

One of the University?s most renowned graduates is Daniel E. Noble (?29), who is widely regarded as a pioneer in mobile communications and semiconductors.

Dr. Noble, a native of Naugatuck, CT and a radio enthusiast, earned his bachelor?s degree in electrical engineering at what was then called the Connecticut State College (now UConn). He also earned his doctoral degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then returned to teach at UConn? (1924 -1940) before building a long and distinguished career at Motorola.

While at UConn, he designed, built and operated the college radio station and developed expertise in the area of FM, or frequency modulation, the technology used in mobile radios. Impressed with his work in Storrs, two Hartford radio stations sought him out and asked him to build relay stations for them. For one of the stations, Dr. Noble built one of the first FM broadcast stations.? This expertise attracted the attention of law enforcement agencies eager for better communications devices in squad cars.? Working with the Connecticut State Police, Dr. Noble developed the nation?s first two-way radio state police communications system.

This remarkable achievement also drew the attention of Paul Galvin, founder of the Galvin Manufacturing Corp., which later became Motorola Corporation.? Mr. Galvin recruited Dr. Noble in 1940 to serve as Director of Research at the Chicago manufacturing company.? Among his first challenges was to design commercial FM two-way radios for police and the U.S. Signal Corps. He also oversaw development of the Army?s SCR-300 FM Walkie-Talkie. Besides conducting groundbreaking work in field of radio communications, Motorola credits Dr. Noble with recognizing the significance of the transistor?s potential soon after it was invented in the late 1940s.

Another UConn engineering alumnus, Jack Germain, was blessed with the good fortune to work with Dr. Noble at Motorola during those heady times.? Like many of his generation, Mr. Germain was a World War II vet who took advantage of the GI Bill to earn his B.S. in electrical engineering at UConn in 1950. ?After earning his degree, he went to work immediately at Motorola as a junior engineer.? It was a time of global uncertainty.? The USSR had tested its first atomic bomb, the Korean conflict had begun, and the U.S. was still investing heavily in the manufacture of military aircraft, ships and bombs.

Emergence of the Twin V Line & Transistors

At Motorola, he was immersed in an exciting, fast-paced world of innovative ideas and opportunities.? Successive promotions landed him in the role of Chief Engineer overseeing the efforts of 3,000 engineers on a variety of transistor-less mobile radio products alongside Dr. Noble.? Mr. Germain recalls, ?When I first went to work in the early 1950?s, the auto industry was working on converting vehicle electrical systems from the original 6 volt systems to 12 volt systems.? So we had to design a radio that would work in either 6 or 12 volt cars. This was my first complex challenge and out of it came a radio system we called the Twin V line which would work in a either case with no adjustments.?

The industry was abruptly transformed by the advent of the transistor and other semi-conductors ? compact, reliable, economic and capable of a myriad of functions.? ?Up until that point,? recalls Mr. Germain, ?we had no device that would work directly off a battery.? With the invention of the transistor, we could build a transmitter and a receiver tied directly to a battery.? This setup offered significant advances in features, not the least of which was an enormous leap in reliability.? New, more capable solid state products soon followed.?

Transistors not only changed radio communications, they also laid the groundwork for today?s computers by offering an alternative to bulky vacuum tubes. In 1949, Dr. Noble established a Motorola research facility in Phoenix to carry out research on solid state electronics. The facility eventually established Motorola?s leading role in the semiconductor business.

The Dan Noble Legacy

Dr. Noble was awarded nine patents and numerous honors, including election to the National Academy of Engineering (1968) for his ?leadership in the development of a wide variety of electronic devices and systems.?? In addition, he was elected a Life Fellow of the IEEE and the Franklin Institute, was presented the WEMA Medal of Achievement, the Franklin Institute?s Stuart Ballantine Medal, the University of Connecticut Engineering Alumni Plaque, and the IEEE Edison Medal (1978).

During his distinguished career, Dr. Noble held many top positions at Motorola, including Director of Research; General Manager of the Communications Division; Vice President and Director of Motorola, Inc.; Vice President and Director in charge of the Communications Division; Group Executive Vice President and Vice Chairman of the Board and Chief Technical Officer of the Corporation. He retired from Motorola in 1970 but served as Chair of the Science Advisory Board.

Dr. Noble died in 1980. In his honor, Motorola established the Dan Noble Fellow award, the company?s highest honorary award to a technologist. It recognizes outstanding technical creativity, innovative ability and productive achievements.

Six Sigma Transforms Quality

That same year, Mr. Germain was named Motorola?s first Senior Vice President of Quality and went on to oversee the company?s development and deployment of yet another revolutionary concept, the Six Sigma system. Continuous improvement in customer satisfaction and Motorola?s business success became the standard.? So, in 1981, the company committed to increasing the quality of its products and services by an ambitious five-fold in just five years.

Mr. Germain notes proudly that the company achieved its aims in just a few years, laying the foundation for the Six Sigma culture. To achieve Six Sigma, Motorola set a target of no more than 3.4 defects per million for every important aspect of the company.? Under Mr. Germain?s leadership, the company achieved major breakthroughs in such areas as engineering, manufacturing, finance and distribution resulting in Motorola earning the first-ever Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, established by the Reagan Administration in 1988. The company?s leadership in establishing measurable, rigorous quality standards led to over 75 quality lectures presented by Motorola personnel before audiences of over 110.

Another important success, achieved while Mr. Germain was Assistant General Manager of the company?s Communication Sector, was its entry into the previously impenetrable Japanese telecommunications market.? Mr. Germain notes that ?Japan had a lot rules that made it difficult to do business.? I was placed in charge of a program to break into the potentially lucrative paging market.? Mr. Germain wrote a letter to a high-ranking Nipon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) official stating that Motorola was interested in selling NTT its popular pagers.? The letter produced an invitation to visit and with the help of innovative product development, the U.S. Embassy in Japan, Motorola?s Washington office and the U.S. State Department, the stage was set for NTT to buy Motorola equipment ? marking an important new era in U.S./Japan collaboration.? ?This success confirmed the use of techniques that were later embodied in the Six Sigma program,? remarks Mr. Germain.

Mr. Germain was involved in another important development: the rise of cellular radio. He led a team that installed a comprehensive cell radio system in Washington, D.C. and developed demonstration projects to prove the feasibility of cellular radio.

After retiring in 1988, Mr. Germain consulted to numerous major companies and one top university, Purdue, that sought his assistance in implementing the Six Sigma model. He notes that three of those businesses went on to win the Malcolm Baldridge award.

As a training ground for inventive, dedicated engineers, UConn has produced many world-class individuals, not least Dan Noble and Jack Germain, two electrical engineers whose technological legacies and contributions at Motorola will surely stand the test of time.

Apple tops list of the most profitable stores in America

Apple's Grand Central Station store in New York City is part of an empire that leads the retail world.

By Brian Zajac, 24/7 Wall St.

The past few years have been challenging for the retailing industry, and there are signs that 2012 will be no different. One key metric used to judge the health of a store is annual sales per square foot. Research company?RetailSails?recently ranked U.S. stores based on this metric.

Apple is at the top of the list with the highest sales per square foot. Perhaps most interesting is the large gap between Apple stores and the rest of the market. Apple stores now average $5,600 per square foot of retail space, nearly double the nearest retailer. However, Apple is a unique case as a leader in technology and innovation, and a company with what may be the strongest brand name in the world.

24/7 Wall St. wanted to see if common features could be found among the retailers that managed to get top dollars per square foot. Branding is perhaps the biggest common factor because it helps drive traffic to the stores. Retail establishments with low foot traffic find it nearly impossible to have strong sales per square foot.

In addition, each retailer on the list could be considered luxury goods sellers, with the exception of GameStop. To GameStop?s advantage, however, gaming DVDs tend to take up less room on a shelf than, say, flat-screen TVs.

It is worth noting that four of the top companies are also featured on RetailSails? 25 fastest-growing retailer list, on which retailers are ranked based on trailing four quarters sales growth. It could very well be that companies with highly profitable locations have easier access to capital to invest in new locations, which in turn further helps underwrite future growth. If so, high margins beget greater sales, at least for some period. The data from retailers on this list would help support that theory.

24/7 Wall St.: The 10 states that run on nuclear power

For comparison to these six highly successful retailers, Wal-Mart Stores has a gross margin of 25 percent and an average of $414 in sales per square foot. All data on revenue, net income and gross margins are based on trailing 12 months earnings reports.

6. GameStop

  • Sales per square foot:?$1,021
  • Not on fastest-growing list
  • Revenue/net income (millions):?$9,665 /$403
  • Gross margin:?27.3 percent
  • 2011 stock price change:?5.5 percent

The world?s largest video game retailer does not have the high growth rates the other retailers on this list have. It does, however, have over 6,600 locations. GameStop has a stronghold on the used game market, which produces much better profit margins than new hardware or software. The company will have to stay focused as increasing competition tries to move in on that segment. Its most powerful competition may not be other video game retailers. More and more games are now directly downloaded to and played on smartphones and tablet PCs.

5. True Religion Apparel

  • Sales per square foot:?$1,096
  • No. 9 on RetailSails fastest growing list
  • Revenue/net income (millions):?$420/$45
  • Gross margin:?64.8 percent
  • 2011 stock price change:?55.3 percent

True Religion Apparel has grown from its 2002 founding into a $420 million global company with distribution in 50 countries. The company has grown in a niche market, as its average selling price of jeans in the full price stores reached $260 in the fourth quarter of 2011. True Religion also sells its products through other major retailers, which include department store Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom.

4. Lululemon Athletica

  • Sales per square foot:?$1,800
  • No. 8 on RetailSails fastest growing list
  • Revenue/net income (millions):?$875 /$165
  • Gross margin:?57.6 ?percent
  • 2011 stock price change:?36.3 percent

Another relative newcomer to retailing, Lululemon Athletica is a yoga-inspired athletic apparel company, which shared its first retail space with a yoga studio. The firm was founded in 1998 in the Canadian city of Vancouver. Revenue has soared recently, and doubled between the firm?s fiscal 2009 and fiscal 2011 years. Lululemon recently raised guidance for fourth-quarter sales and earnings. The retailer only has over 150 stores and has opened several a month for the past year, so it is likely to be able to continue to grow.

24/7 Wall St.: 8 reasons gas will hit $5 this year

3. Coach

  • Sales per square foot:?$1,824
  • Not on RetailSails fastest-growing list
  • Revenue/net income (millions):?$4,481/$951
  • Gross margin:?72.3 percent
  • 2011 stock price change:?10.4 percent

Best known for its high-end leather handbags, Coach also sells wallets, shoes and novelty accessories. Its primary markets are the U.S. and Japan, which account for almost 90 percent of sales. One of the examples of the international growth of Coach is that it has individual e-commerce sites for 21 different countries.

2. Tiffany

  • Sales per square foot:?$3,085
  • No. 25 on RetailSails growth rate list
  • Revenue/net income (millions):?$3,557 /$442
  • Gross margin:?59.2 percent
  • 2011 stock price change:?6.4 percent

Diamonds are small and pricey, so it should come as no surprise to that a luxury jeweler is on a list featuring sales per square feet. Tiffany opened its first store in 1837. The luxury jeweler is well known for its Tiffany Blue color, association with Hollywood films and its flagship Fifth Ave store, which is one of the most expensive locations in the world for a retail store. In contrast to Apple, which is a relatively new retail brand, Tiffany has been in business since 1837.

1. Apple

  • Sales per square foot:?$5,647
  • No. 5 on the RetailSails top 25 growth list
  • Revenue/net income (millions):?$127,841 /$32,982
  • Gross margin:?42.4 percent
  • 2011 stock price change:?25.6 percent

Apple is a relative newcomer to the retail scene, with its first store opening in 2001. The stores, which feature genius bars for providing advice and repairs, have become a mecca for its fans. It is not uncommon to see die-hard fans lining up outside the stores, sometimes for days, before a new product launch. In the latest quarter alone, Apple sold 37 million iPhones through all its sales channels. Broader signs of Apple?s success are that its global revenue rose 73 percent to $46.3 billion, and its $477 billion market capitalization, which is the highest of any public company in the world.

Samsung ML-2165W

If you need a personal mono laser to sit on your desk, and don't want to give up a lot of desktop real estate for it, the Samsung ML-2165W ($130 street) is a tempting choice. It offers Wi-Fi, suitable paper capacity for a personal printer, reasonably high-quality text and graphics, and acceptable, if somewhat slow, speed. Samsung also offers free apps to let you print from an Android, iOS, or Windows 7 device by way of a Wi-Fi access point. (It also plans to add direct Wi-Fi printing with a firmware upgrade later this year). Unfortunately, the printer also has a relatively high running cost, which limits its appeal if you print a lot of pages.

The ML-2165W's most striking feature by far is its small size. It may be the smallest laser printer that's ever showed up at PC Labs, at just 7.0 by 13.0 by 8.5-inches (HWD). That's smaller than most inkjets. It's also smaller than, for example, the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w ($149 direct, 3.5 stars) or the Editors' Choice in this category, the Brother HL-2270DW ($150 street, 4 stars).

One of the costs of keeping the printer size down is that the ML-2165W is a little weak on paper handling. It offers a single 150-sheet tray, no manual feed, and no automatic duplexing (for printing on both sides of a page). The low paper capacity means that if you print more than about 30 pages a day, you'll have to add paper often enough so it may turn into a small annoyance.

This could be a problem if you want to take advantage of Wi-Fi to share the printer with even one other person. For most people who use the ML-2165W as a strictly personal printer, however, the 150 sheets should be adequate.

Samsung ML-2165W

Setup, Speed, and Output Quality
Setup on a Windows Vista system was standard for a USB-connected mono laser. The ML-2165W's speed is best described as fast enough that you won't feel like you're always waiting for it, but slower than the competition. It came in on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at 7.6 pages per minute (ppm). In comparison, the Brother HL-2270DW managed 11.7 ppm and the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w effectively tied that at 11.4 ppm.

The ML-2165W did better on output quality than speed. Text quality falls in the middle of the range for mono lasers. It's easily good enough for any typical business use, including documents with small fonts?at least, if you pick the right font. Depending on how much of a perfectionist you are, you might even consider it good enough for desktop publishing applications.

Graphics quality in my tests was dead on par for a mono laser, making it good enough for any internal business need, including PowerPoint handouts for example. Photo quality was a bit below par, with the printer losing more shades of gray than most mono lasers. However the quality was still acceptable for most situations where you'd use a mono laser for photos, like printing Web pages that include photos. On the other hand, I'd hesitate to use the printer for a client newsletter with photos, because of a noticeable loss of the subtle shading that makes photos look photo-realistic.

One potential issue for the printer is the relatively high running cost, at 4.3 cents per page. If you don't expect to print much, that shouldn't be a problem, but it's something you should consider before buying. As a point of comparison, the Brother HL-2270DW's claimed cost per page is 2.2 cents lower, or a savings of $22 for every thousand pages. You don't have to print all that many pages for this to add up to a big difference in total cost over the life of the printers.

The other issue you'll want to consider is paper handling. Both the Brother HL-2270DW and HP LaserJet Pro P1102w offer a higher paper capacity along with a 10-page multipurpose tray in one case and a manual feed in the other?something you'll also find in Samsung's own ML-2545 ($100 street, 3 stars). On the other hand, the additional paper handling features go hand-in-hand with a bigger size. If you can live without them, and particularly if you want a printer that takes up as little desk space as possible, the Samsung ML-2165W is a potentially good choice as long as you're not concerned about the running cost.

Novice Internet Marketers ? Understanding the Basics of SEO ...

Posted by ? February 23, 2012

New Internet marketers often have a great deal of trouble mastering the concept of search engine optimization. This is partly because SEO is always changing. The Internet is always evolving. All of these things can make it seem like you have to relearn the subject of search engine optimization over and over again. While there are many things that are constantly changing for businesses operating online there are also some that has never changed when it comes to SEO. Mastering these few things can help you make your SEO efforts wildly successful.
kodak easy shre c195
Content continues to reign supreme when it comes to SEO. In fact, content is the most vital aspect of your Internet marketing efforts. Every Internet marketer has been told this about a million or so times. The primary reason you hear this so often is because it?s absolutely true. It?s the content on your site that keeps your business alive and kicking in addition to driving your campaigns. It is your method of sharing valuable information about the goods and/or services you provide. Make sure that your content is well written and properly optimized. This will help you make sure that your clients and partners believe in you while simultaneously keeping the major search engines happy. http://kodakpulse.org/

Consistently update your site. It?s likely you are already updating regularly if you have a blog attached to our site. You also need to ensure the content on the rest of your site gets regular updates. Frequent updates means your sites will be visited by search engine spiders more often.

And if the spiders find fresh content regularly, they are more likely to increase your ranking. Another important factor is that the people coming to your site will be able to tell you are keeping your site updated, making modifications when necessary and generally staying on top of things. This shows that you care and are invested in making sure that your business stays on a good track.
nikon5100.net/
Build links to other peoples? site. Many new internet marketers spend so much time getting inbound links from good sites that they forget to set up outbound links. Inbound and outbound links are just as important as each other. Linking to a site is a great way to get their attention making your life easier if you want to get links from them. They?ll see the trackback, have a look around your site and maybe set up a link to your site as well. Outbound links are something search engine spiders check for. If all they find are inbound links they aren?t going to rank your sites very well.

SEO, when done right, really isn?t all that hard. If you apply the essentials consistently you?ll see that it?s fairly simple. That?s the case with most things in the world of Internet marketing. Building your Internet marketing business is about constantly learning new things and applying what you?ve learned. The more you work and the more you learn, the better off you are going to be. Apply these tips and see how quickly your business launches to the next level.

Online Gaming Tricks And Tips ? It's Not All Left-Handed Mouses ...

Online games are supposed to be fun. If that weren?t true, then all the millions who play wouldn?t do it. As with all other things, you?ll find some people better at games than others. When a person is getting involved with online gaming, that?s when it?s most true. Not the end of the world because it?s pretty easy to get an idea about things pretty fast. All you need is the right equipment (like left handed mouses if you are a left handed person) and the right attitude (can-do) and you shouldn?t have any problems at all. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you make sure that you have a good time gaming.

It?s critical you have what you need in the way of gear/equipment. But, if you?re just a casual player, then it?s probably not a necessity. You can simply switch the buttons on your mouse. However, if you love your gaming, even on an occasional basis, you still may want to get a mouse for lefties; and that?s especially true for truly serious games like Warcraft/EverQuest. This will make it easier for you to ?get your game on? and compete with the other people that are playing the game with you. Also, it doesn?t have to be gold-plated; you can find great deals almost anywhere. Did you ever consider or think you would find as much information on Garden Storage Boxes as you have?

All you need to do is follow along because we have this plus much more in store.

The one thing you do not want to do is carelessly ignore something that does not grab you right away. That can sometimes be a mistake because on closer observation you will often change your mind.

The best results will be from taking action on hard core facts, and then also seeing what can be done in other ways in a creative fashion. This is truly exciting stuff, and it will get even better later on as you finish the article.

So, if you think that you will not be able to remember it all, you can and we have confidence that it will gel with some helpful tips to follow. No need to go there too much about connecting speeds on the net. It is hard to have fun if you are trying to play an online game with a dial up internet connection. If you?re in serious need of a speed upgrade/overhaul, then put the thinking cap on and figure out a way to do it ? you know why (the gaming sucks). Make sure that your basic tools are able to handle the game?s requirements. You probably won?t know for sure what you need, so that?s why it?s important to read the specs for the game you want. You just need to do a little bit of research which could possibly prevent being upset if you buy it, and it is not working as it should on your system.

Learn everything you can about the game that you want to play. Knowing your game makes it easier for you to play it and for others to play it with you. Games have a lot in them such as a story, various environments, as well as other features and specialize knowledge. So don?t why away from reading manuals, online tutorials, or tips, etc. You never know what you?ll find that you could have overlooked. Online gaming is always changing and improving, and you cannot allow yourself to fall behind.

Online gaming was created to be fun and enjoyable. Even the most complex game universes are supposed to be pure fun. If you?re looking for the maximum amount of fun and anything else, you will need to think about a few things. The left-handed mouse plus keyboard shortcuts is the order of the day for those to whom it applies. You need to work as a cool team member, so remember what we said about being humble. Remember: gaming is always more enjoyable when everyone has fun!

You will find, like we all have, that acquiring new knowledge involves dedication and responsibilities, and that applies to Garden Storage Boxes Review, as well. What is related to that in a very real way has to do with the abundance of data and content found on the web.

There is nothing unusual at all about conflicts between points of view and what people find in their own research.

What we are getting at is the absolute need for you to be watchful in your desire to study this material, or anything else.

The need for you to take strong measures that ensure your belief in only the most stringent facts is not subject for debate, ever.

(AP) ? Gunmen in Syria staged a guerrilla-style ambush that killed a senior state prosecutor and a judge Sunday in an attack that suggested armed factions are growing bolder and more coordinated in their uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime.

The roadway slayings ? reported in an opposition-dominated northern region by the Syrian state news agency ? came a day after a deadly hit-and-run attack on a political figure in the heart of the pro-Assad city of Aleppo.

The targeted killings have not reached Assad's inner circle, but they indicate a growing shift toward violent tactics by the opposition as it brings aboard more military defectors and seeks to tighten control over the small pieces of territory in its hands.

The fears of a looming civil war have neighboring Jordan racing to finish a refugee camp near the Syrian border to handle a possible exodus of people fleeing for safety.

Meanwhile, Egypt became the latest Arab nation to publicly snub Assad by ordering the withdrawal of its ambassador in Damascus.

The Syrian government has offered some concessions, including proposing a referendum next week that could allow more political voices to challenge Assad's Baath Party. But the opposition demands nothing short of Assad's resignation. And the regime has not eased off its attacks on the opposition forces, which it describes as "terrorists" carrying out a foreign conspiracy to destabilize the country.

In Homs in central Syria, government forces sent in reinforcements as they shelled the rebel-held Baba Amr district that has been under near constant barrage for nearly two weeks, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The group said at least 14 people were killed Sunday across Syria, half of them by government troops.

"I'm worried that Syria is going to slide into a civil war," British Foreign Secretary William Hague told the BBC on Sunday.

The U.N. last gave a death toll for the conflict in January, saying 5,400 people had been killed in 2011 alone. But hundreds more have been killed since, according to activist groups. An opposition group, Local Coordination Committees, says more than 7,300 have been killed since the uprising began more than 11 months ago.

There is no way to independently verify the numbers, since Syria bans almost all foreign journalists and human rights organizations.

The latest assassinations came on a road in the northwest province of Idlib, which has become a patchwork of areas held either by the government or mutinous soldiers who have safe-haven bases in nearby Turkey.

The state news agency SANA said gunmen opened fire on a car carrying Idlib provincial state prosecutor Nidal Ghazal and Judge Mohammed Ziadeh, who were killed instantly. The driver also was fatally wounded.

Idlib has witnessed intense clashes between troops loyal to Assad and army defectors who attack and then melt into the rugged mountains. In June, the town of Jisr al-Shugour became the first area to fall into the hands of rebels, who were accused by the government of killing scores of people and setting government buildings on fire. Syrian troops loyal to Assad retook the area shortly afterward.

On Saturday, SANA said gunmen shot to death Jamal al-Bish, a member of the city council of the nearby northern city of Aleppo. The city has been a center of support for Assad since the uprising began.

The back-to-back slayings follow the Feb. 11 killing of a Syrian army general in the first assassination to take place in the capital city of Damascus. Brig. Gen. Issa al-Khouli, a doctor and the chief of a military hospital in the capital, was shot as he left his home. Last month, the head of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent branch in Idlib was shot to death while on his way to Damascus.

In Cairo, Egyptian state news agency MENA said Foreign Minister Mohammed Amr decided to withdraw the country's ambassador to Syria. The report gave no reason for the decision, but Arab governments have been pulling back diplomatic backing for Assad in protest against his refusal to back regional peace efforts.

Earlier this month, the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, led by powerful Saudi Arabia, said it would withdraw its ambassadors and expel Syrian envoys from the oil-rich region. Tunisia also has pulled its ambassador from Damascus.

In Damascus, a funeral was held for a man killed a day earlier when Syrian security forces fired bullets and tear gas at thousands of people marching in a funeral procession that turned into one of the largest protests in the capital.

The Local Coordination Committees said security forces pressured the parents of the victim, Samer al-Khatib, to bury him early so that his funeral would not turn into an anti-government protest.

Activist groups called for a one-day strike in Damascus to express support for other cities in revolt. But there was little response. Residents in the capital told The Associated Press that businesses were open as usual on the first day of the work week. School and universities also were operating.

Calls for strikes in the past did not succeed in tightly controlled Damascus, where government forces and informers keep a close eye on all activities. The capital has been mostly quiet since the uprising began.

(AP) ? "The Help" collected three prizes at the NAACP Image Awards, including top actress honors for Viola Davis, the supporting actress prize for Octavia Spencer and outstanding motion picture.

Davis and Spencer have collected armloads of accolades for their work in the film about black maids who speak out against their white employers during the civil rights movement. Both are up for Academy Awards next week.

Davis said the film has "just been the joy of my life."

"I found my voice," she said. "I just emerged through 'The Help.'"

The ceremony Friday at the Shrine Auditorium, which honored diversity in the arts, was punctuated by moving tributes to Whitney Houston, the Black Stuntmen's Association and George Lucas and the Tuskegee Airmen.

Yolanda Adams sang the spiritual song "I Love the Lord, He Heard My Cry" as part of a tribute to Houston, who died last week.

"We love you, Nip," Adams said as she finished the song, referring to the singer's nickname.

Footage of Houston accepting the Image Award for outstanding female artist in 1994 was shown, as was Denzel Washington's presentation of that award, in which he called her an "artist of unparalleled stature."

Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte presented the President's Award to the Black Stuntmen's Association, which was established in 1967 to break racial barriers and earn black performers a place alongside white stuntmen in film and television.

They preceded their presentation with a comic exchange on stage.

"We are not stuntmen," said Poitier, 85.

"Sidney, just the fact that we're standing here, we could be stuntmen," the 84-year-old Belafonte quipped.

Some of the original members of the Black Stuntmen's Association were on hand to accept the award.

Samuel L. Jackson presented Lucas with the Vanguard Award. The filmmaker was honored for his body of work, including the recent "Red Tails," which tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, several of whom were in the audience. While some of the elderly airmen struggled to stand, the audience rose to their feet to welcome them with a standing ovation.

Lucas said he made the film to be inspirational, patriotic and to "show that everybody has contributed to building this country into what it is today."

In presenting the award, Jackson said he has always loved "Star Wars" and would have done anything to appear in an installment of the space story. He recalled telling Lucas: "I'll be a Storm Trooper and just run across the screen. Nobody even has to know I'm in it."

Jackson went on to play Mace Windu in the three "Star Wars" prequels.

As part of the tribute to Lucas, Jennifer Hudson and Ne-Yo performed "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" while Lucas sang along from his seat.

Hudson was also a winner Friday, claiming the outstanding album prize for "I Remember Me."

Other winners announced during the two-hour telecast hosted by Sanaa Lathan and Anthony Mackie included Regina King, named outstanding actress for her work in the drama "SouthLAnd," and Tracee Ellis Ross and Malcolm-Jamal Warner for their lead roles in the comedy "Reed Between the Lines."

Radio pioneer Cathy Hughes accepted the Chairman's Award at a separate ceremony in New Jersey that was included in the broadcast on NBC.

Gospel singer Kirk Franklin closed the program with a version of Houston's "The Greatest Love of All" before launching into his uplifting song, "Today."

The Image Awards are presented annually by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the group's members select the winners. As she accepted her award, King thanked the organization for "continuously providing a stage to recognize and applaud us."

"We need it," the "SouthLAnd" star said. "There is some magnificent talent here that would not be recognized otherwise." %href_on(http://www.twitter.com/APSandy

A year after uprising, militias hold sway in Libya

This week, Libya will celebrate the one year anniversary of the start of the popular uprising that led to the ouster and killing of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi last October. (AP Photo/ Abdel Magid Al Fergany)

(AP) ? One revolutionary militia controls the airport. Others carve up neighborhoods of the Libyan capital into fiefdoms. They clash in the streets, terrifying residents. They hold detainees in makeshift prisons where torture is said to be rampant.

As Libya on Friday marks the one-year anniversary of the start of the uprising against Moammar Gadhafi, hundreds of armed militias are the real power on the ground in the country, and the government that took the longtime strongman's place is largely impotent, unable to rein in fighters, rebuild decimated institutions or stop widespread corruption.

The revolutionary militias contend they are Libya's heroes ? the ones who drove Gadhafi from power and who now keep security in the streets at a time when the police and military are all but nonexistent. They insist they won't give up their weapons to a government that is too weak, too corrupt and, they fear, too willing to let elements of the old dictatorship back into positions of power.

"I am fed up," said the commander of a militia of fighters from the western mountain town of Zintan who control Tripoli's airport. Al-Mukhtar al-Akhdar says Libya's politicians unfairly blame the militias for the country's chaos while doing nothing to bring real change.

They believe "revolutionaries have no place in Libya now," said al-Akhdar, who was once a tour company owner in Zintan until he took up arms against Gadhafi and now sports a military uniform. "We paid a very heavy price in the revolution, not for the sake of a seat or authority, but for the sake of freedoms and rights."

As a result, Libya has been flipped upside down, from a country where all power was in the hands of one man, Gadhafi, to one where it has been broken up into hundreds of different hands, each taking its own decisions. The National Transitional Council, which officially rules the country, is struggling to incorporate the militias into the military and police, while trying to get the economy back on its feet and reshape government ministries, courts and other institutions hollowed out under Gadhafi.

In one sign of the lack of control, Finance Minister Hassan Zaklam admitted that millions of dollars from Gadhafi family assets returned to Libya by European countries ? a potentially key source of revenue ? have flowed right back out of Libya, stolen by corrupt officials and smuggled out in suitcases through the ports.

"The money comes for transit only," Zaklam said in a Feb. 6 interview on Libya state TV. He threatened to resign if the government didn't impose control over ports or stop unfreezing the assets. "I can't be a clown," he said.

Government spokesman Ashur Shamis blamed revolutionaries in charge of ports and middle- and lower-ranking bureaucrats from the old regime who still retain their posts, known among Libyans as the "Green Snakes," after the signature color of Gadhafi's rule.

At the airport, al-Akhdar blamed customs employees and said his fighters are keeping a closer eye on them ? but he insisted stopping smuggling was the police and military's responsibility.

The militias, meanwhile, are accused of acting like vigilantes and armed gangs, fighting over turf and taking the law into their own hands. Many run private prisons, detaining criminals, suspected former regime members or simply people who run afoul of the fighters.

In a report Wednesday, London-based Amnesty International said it found prisoners had been tortured or abused in all but one of 11 militia-run facilities it visited. Detainees told the group they had been beaten for hours with whips, cables and plastic hoses and given electrical shocks.

At least 12 detainees have died since September after torture, it said.

The militias arose during last year's 8-month-long civil war against Gadhafi.

Soon after anti-regime protests first erupted nationwide on Feb. 17, 2011, Libya's second largest city Benghazi and the rest of the eastern half of the country threw off rule from Tripoli. As Gadhafi clamped down in the west, Libyan citizens formed local militias based around a city, town or even neighborhood, taking up arms to fight alongside breakaway army units.

Backed by NATO airstrikes, the militias swept into Tripoli in August, driving out Gadhafi. The militias then were at the forefront of battles for the last regime strongholds, ending with Gadhafi's capture and killing in October at the hands of a militia from Misrata, a city east of Tripoli that endured one of the bloodiest sieges of the civil war.

Since then, militias have carved up neighborhoods in Tripoli and other cities, establishing their hold with checkpoints at the entrances. There are efforts between them to cooperate: If a brigade chases a suspect into another district, it must seek clearance from the local militia, said Jalal al-Gelani, the deputy police chief of the Tripoli neighborhood of Souq al-Jomaa.

But borders often overlap. Disputes break out over personnel or relatives from one militia detained by another. Then the weapons come out and shooting begins. There are usually no casualties, but the battles terrify residents. In January, a gunbattle between Misrata and Zintan revolutionaries erupted in a turf fight over a sports complex. The two sides fired rifles and heavy machine guns, shattering the complex's windows and damaging cars.

The police have been eclipsed. When Tripoli fell, most police fled and shed their uniforms, fearful of revenge attacks. The police chief in Souq al-Jomaa never came back. Now there are about 200 police in the Souq al-Jomaa station, about a tenth of the number of militiamen, said one officer, Mustafa al-Darnawi.

At night, policemen vanish, afraid of attacks. Police stations are guarded by militiamen.

"Without revolutionaries, the police are zeros," said a Souq al-Jomaa resident, 24-year-old Ahmed Hajaji, standing next to the local police station, where a large sign over the entrance read, "No to revenge, yes to forgiveness."

Last week, top militia commanders from the western half of the country gathered in Tripoli to form a united front to coordinate their activities and avoid fights. The front mirrors a separate bloc created in the east.

The fronts also present a political force to pressure the National Transitional Council and the Cabinet it created, headed by Prime Minister Abdel Rahim al-Keib, signaling they will not lay down their arms.

NTC efforts to integrate the revolutionaries have already brought opposition.

A newly formed Defense Ministry "Warriors Committee" has so far registered 200,000 revolutionaries, who are given the option to join the army, police, intelligence or get help returning to society, such as a loan to start up a business or even travel abroad for studies.

But according to the former rebels, the committee has also registered members of Gadhafi's forces alongside the revolutionaries as part of an attempt at reconciliation, angering many in the militias.

"This is out of the question," said Farag al-Swehli, the commander of a Misrata militia operating in Tripoli. "You can't bring two people who fought against each other to sit next to each other ... There is only one way: revolutionaries are the army."

At the same time, the militias appear to be pressing for a political say as well, demanding figures they feel come from the ranks of the revolution be given government posts.

And they are confident the NTC and government has to listen to them.

"We can withdraw our troops in one second ... but who is going to protect Libya," said al-Akhdar in a defiant tone. "If they have a national army or police, let them show us. We haven't seen any so far."

China to send senior envoy for talks in Syria (AP)

BEIJING ? China says it will send a senior envoy to Syria for talks this week on ending the violence there.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told a news briefing Thursday that Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun would be in Syria on Friday and Saturday. Zhai met a Syrian opposition delegation in Beijing last week.

Liu says China wants to play a constructive role in mediating an end to 11 months of bloodshed that has killed well over 5,000 in the Syrian regime's crackdown on protesters and rebels.

China and Russia drew the wrath of the United States and much of the Arab world for vetoing a U.N. Security Council resolution aimed at pressuring Syria's leader to step down.
